Bernadette’s House, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) charitable nonprofit organization that was founded in 2012. Our all-volunteer staff is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive home-like environment for preteen and teenage girls who live in and around the Laurel, Maryland area.  Each girl who enters our program is matched with a mentor who is committed to developing a nurturing relationship that encourages her to venture on a journey of self-discovery.

Supporting our youth beyond traditional school hours is an essential facet of a well-rounded education. The Afterschool Alliance* reports that “…access to quality and affordable afterschool programs is critical for our youth, our working families and our communities. Students who regularly attend quality afterschool programs consistently demonstrate better academic performance and behavior in the classroom, stronger peer relations and emotional adjustment and lower incidences of delinquency. Students involved in after-school programs have significantly higher attendance rates, score higher on mathematics and writing assessments and are more likely to graduate from high school than those who are not involved in such programs.”

Our Afterschool and Summer Mentoring programs meet an unmet demand for quality afterschool programming designed for older youth. Today, most afterschool programs are not available to students once they enter middle and high school.   Our primary focus is on 10-17 year old girls who are at high risk for academic failure and delinquent behavior. Concentrating our efforts on this critical age group allows us to provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum that impacts character, attitudes and behaviors and encourages the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Our programs are affordable and respect the rights and values of the families that we serve.

*The Afterschool Alliance is a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization working to ensure that all children and youth have access to quality afterschool programs. More information is available at
